"All You Can Do Is Do Your Best"

As I left the very populated grocery store that I frequent the "Cart Man" and I had a conversation. He is one of the Helping Hands crew members to assist people with their groceries and bring the carts back from the lot into the store. This particular Cart Man has some obvious special needs and also has the work ethic of an Ox. No matter what day or time I go to this store he seems to be working. No matter the weather, he's out there; Offering to load up groceries and diligently lining up and hauling rows of carts back through the lot.
As I handed him my cart after loading up my groceries he says 'Don't bump me!'. Oh my, of course I won't bump you! I replied. For the next few minutes he went on to tell me that people come in and out of the lot so quickly that they don't see him and often bump him.
Once I assured him that I would not bump him we said our goodbyes. As I walked away he yelled out, "All You Can Do Is Do Your Best!!".

This conversations has made me think: Are we really in that much of a hurry that we don't see this man in the parking lot? Is there really something so pressing to get to that we don't have the common decency to look up and pay attention

Is that text really THAT important that you can't wait two minutes and look up and say 'Thank You' to your cashier? (....guilty...)

And I'm not just talking about in the grocery store. I'm talking about in LIFE. Why are we always in such a hurry? Why are we always on our phones? What has happened to LIVING?

Is there really an email so earth-shattering that is going to be in your inbox since you checked it 5 minutes ago? (...guilty....)

I mean, I'm all for the time-suck that is Facebook, but really. Will those status updates still be there if you don't check it every 10 minutes? (...guilty....)

All You Can Do Is Do Your Best. This phrase has been resonating in me ever since he said it. What if we all had this mentality. Every. Single. Day. To do our best.

What if we all just SLOWED DOWN and lived every day in our BEST way possible.

And so this blog was born. On this 14th day in January, 2013. It will document my journey of slowing down and giving it my best. Feel free to follow along for the ride.

  3. Maybe it's because I work in retail, but I ALWAYS talk to my cashiers. They don't always talk to me, but Cody and I always tell them hello. We ask them how their day is going. We tell them thank you and goodbye. Lately Cody's been telling ANY customer service persons we run across that we have a daughter due any day. That always gets conversation going. LOL!

That said, I definitely live on Facebook more than I should. I'll admit to that. I am absolutely a hardcore Facebooker. BUT! I at least refuse to upgrade to a smart phone. I have a VERY old, simple phone that I truly only use to text my husband and make phone calls. I refuse to upgrade to a smart phone, because I know if I do I will be WAY too connected to Facebook at all times. Right now, my phone has NO internet ability. If I got a smart phone, I'm afraid I'd be the person glued to my Facebook via my phone. And I don't want that. I am on Facebook ENOUGH! lol

    1. Yes that is my problem, the iPhone and Facebook. It's just always THERE. Like 'oh let me just jump on Facebook while I have my phone out!'. I need to be more aware of that. I can catch up on updates in bulk, not as they get posted! Lol.

    2. I can text Facebook like texting a person to make a status update, but that's the extend of my ability on my phone. To reply to comments or view anything else on Facebook, I just have to wait until I am home. And for me. That's best! lol

  6. OHMYGOSH!!!! You're BACK!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I'm calm now. *wink* Yes, you are so right. People are plugged into their electronics and not life or other people! Drives me nutz to see people texting/talking on the phone while driving. I feel so badly that the Cart Man gets bumped on a regular basis. How sad is that??

  14. Welcome back! So glad to see your are doing this blog with a wonderful starting post! Giving it your best is actually scriptural: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." - Colossians 3:23 (A very good verse to put into practice every day, I do try.)

  19. Welcome back!! I LOVE this post and your timing is perfect because I just vowed to never take my phone out of my purse again when I'm in a store or an office.
Over the holidays I noticed my grandkids speaking to their mothers who never even looked up at them and just muttered answers. Of course I had a long talk with all and we all promised to drastically limit our 'electronics' time when the kids are present.
Now I need to work on that slowing down part. I will stop back often for a little inspiration:)

  20. Hey Gal! It sure was good to hear from you again! I totally agree with your comment. I have heard some people say that children don't understand the meaning of being baptized, but sometimes UI think they have a better handle on it than some adults.
